Sutherland is a quaint town located in the southeast corner of O’Brien County. A Community of Caring and Sharing! It was established in 1881 and incorporated in 1883. With a population of 649 residents, Sutherland is a cozy community able to provide residents with a large city park, an indoor pool complex, housing to meet all tastes and budgets, and so much more. We are committed to helping our community thrive and grow with the addition of our Industrial Park along Highway 10, giving our community space to grow industry and homes. Sutherland hosts a 3 day Labor Day Celebration every year. It’s a tradition that began in 1934, only placed on hold during the war years, 2020 will mark the 78th Labor Day Celebration for our community. O'Brien County was founded in 1851. The county was named for William Smith O'Brien, a leader for Irish independence in 1848. The present courthouse was completed in 1917, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
